Stan Pines
A con man with a secret mission spanning three decades to save his brother and protect reality from Bill Cipher.
Stanley "Grunkle Stan" Pines is the central figure of Gravity Falls, serving as the great-uncle to protagonists Dipper and Mabel Pines during their summer at the Mystery Shack. Initially portrayed as a scheming, frugal proprietor who runs his tourist trap with shady tactics, Stan wears a signature black suit, red string bow tie, and fez, often accessorized with an eyepatch and an 8-ball-topped cane. Behind a facade of greed, he spent thirty years secretly working to bring back his twin brother, the real Stanford Pines, through an interdimensional portal.

Lore & Background
Stan's backstory, revealed in "A Tale of Two Stans," details the brothers' upbringing in Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey. After Stan inadvertently ruined Ford's university acceptance, he was disowned and lived a transient life before reuniting with Ford in Gravity Falls, Oregon. When Ford refused to let Stan help hide a dangerous journal, they fought near the portal, causing Ford to fall into an alternate dimension. For 30 years, Stan assumed Ford's identity, faked his death, and used the Mystery Shack as a front to rebuild the machine. He acquired all three journals written by Ford—originally held by Gideon Gleeful and Dipper—to activate the portal. This long con culminated in "Not What He Seems," where he successfully brought Ford home just before the apocalyptic event known as Weirdmageddon, instigated by the demon Bill Cipher.
