Zoltraak
The demon Qual's killing spell, which humans turned into ordinary offensive magic.
Zoltraak is a piercing spell first created by the demon Qual. Humans later studied it and absorbed it into their own magic, and today it is the ordinary offensive magic used by modern mages.

Background
Qual, the Elder Sage of Corruption, made Zoltraak as a killing spell, the first piercing spell; it went straight through humanity's defensive magic and magic-resistant gear, and around the Größe Forest it killed 40 percent of the adventurers and 70 percent of the mages. Frieren sealed Qual during the Hero Party's journey, after which mages across the continent spent half a century researching the spell. Once its principles were understood, new defences were designed to stop it. Frieren, one of the main contributors to that research, adapted it into a demon-killing variant that she taught Fern, and when she released Qual from his seal she killed him with his own spell. Mages born after it became standard learn to block it by reflex, which gives them an edge over older mages such as Frieren and some demons.
