Lolth

The Demon Queen of Spiders, chief goddess of the drow.

Lolth, the Demon Queen of Spiders, is the chief goddess of the drow in Dungeons & Dragons. She is also called the Spider Queen and the Queen of the Demonweb Pits, after her realm in the Abyss.

Lore & Background

She takes two forms: an exquisitely beautiful female dark elf, sometimes covered in spiders, and a giant black widow spider with the head of a female drow or human; in third edition her spider form became more drider-like because of the War of the Spider Queen novels. Gary Gygax created her for the World of Greyhawk, and she later came to the Forgotten Realms. In the Realms storyline she began as an intermediate goddess in the Demonweb Pits, the 66th layer of the Abyss, and through War of the Spider Queen became a greater goddess. She was first mentioned in the 1978 module Descent into the Depths of the Earth and was the main villain of Queen of the Demonweb Pits (1980).
