Plot summary

The story begins in the dwarven complex of Mithral Hall in the year 1409 DR. King Bruenor Battlehammer, with Drizzt Do'Urden, mourns the loss of his friend Regis and adoptive daughter Catti-brie, both lost to the Spellplague nearly 24 years before. Wulfgar has returned to Icewind Dale. Bruenor laments the changes since those events, including the Treaty of Garumn's Gorge bringing peace to the Silver Marches and Obould II inheriting the Kingdom of Many-Arrows.

Above all, Bruenor regrets never completing his quest to find Gauntlgrym, the legendary home of the Delzoun dwarves. Meanwhile, gnome inventor Nanfoodle and orc Jessa Dribble-Obould hatch a plan to poison Bruenor. Nanfoodle poisons the king's ale. Thibbledorf Pwent notices something amiss but cannot place it.

Bruenor drinks the ale, and the population of Mithral Hall mourns his apparent death. Banak Brawnanvil is named Eleventh King. Pwent seeks out Nanfoodle and Jessa for answers. During a fight, Drizzt and a very-much alive Bruenor arrive.

It is revealed that Bruenor faked his death with the help of Nanfoodle and Jessa to continue his quest for Gauntlgrym while leaving Mithral Hall in Banak's hands. Drizzt, Bruenor, Jessa, Nanfoodle, Pwent, Guenhwyvar, and Andahar then leave on their secret quest.
