Overview

The Neverwinter Nights series takes place primarily in Neverwinter, also called the City of Skilled Hands, on the Sword Coast of Faerûn. The city grew from a multi-racial settlement named Eigersstor founded several hundred years before the games begin. In the first game, Neverwinter is beset by a magical plague called the Wailing Death; in the second, it faces invasion from an ancient enemy known as the King of Shadows.

Campaign

Both Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 include a default campaign structured into distinct acts, with side quests that may span the entire game. The player creates a character through the game's interface, either customizing one from scratch or selecting a pre-set character. Choices such as race and class affect combat and abilities, while gender and appearance are purely cosmetic. Key choices in quests can alter combat encounters, plot points, and the story's outcome. In addition to the base campaign and multiplayer mode, each game includes software development tools: the Aurora Toolset for Neverwinter Nights and the Electron Toolset, rewritten in C#, for Neverwinter Nights 2, allowing players to create and share custom campaigns.

Reception

The first Neverwinter Nights received a Metacritic score of 91/100 from critics and 8.1/10 from users. Greg Kasavin of GameSpot praised its accessibility, calling it a game with much to offer even non-RPG fans. Gamezone commended its graphic and sound design, noting that the musical score intensifies with combat. Allgame's Mark Hoogland found the Aurora toolset's creation options impressive. Eurogamer's Gestalt criticized the single-player campaign's focus on combat over roleplaying but was optimistic about mod support. The series was praised for its customizable player character and non-player characters, described by Kotaku's Mary Kenney as fun, flawed, and weird, including paladin Lady Aribeth de Tylmarande, kobold bard Deekin Scalesinger, and writer Volothamp Geddarm.

Legacy

The Neverwinter Nights series has been used by educators in classrooms. Professor Mike Carbonara at the University of Alberta used the Aurora Toolset to create an economics game teaching fixed price commerce, mark up, and supply and demand. Researchers at MIT Education Arcade developed Revolution, a multiplayer game set in 1770s colonial Williamsburg to teach about the American Revolution. In 2005, Nora Paul and Kathleen A. Hansen designed a journalism module where players investigate a train derailment in the fictional town of Harperville.
