The Crenshinibon
The sentient Crystal Shard of Salvatore's first novel.
Crenshinibon, the Crystal Shard, is a magical, sentient crystal in R. A. Salvatore's novel The Crystal Shard (1988), the first book of The Icewind Dale Trilogy.
Lore & Background
It lends power to whoever wields it, raises tower sanctuaries in its own likeness and works its way into the minds of others, its wielder included; sunlight is its source of power. The failed wizard Akar Kessel finds it when left to die in the Spine of the World, and the shard, hungry for power, bends his mind to its will. He enslaves the goblins and orcs of the mountains and takes the balor Errtu as his general, though the demon wants the shard for himself. In the end the shard's heat sets off an avalanche that kills Kessel and buries it, and its hold over his army breaks.
