Time of Troubles
When the gods were cast down to Toril.
The Time of Troubles is the event of the Forgotten Realms told in The Avatar Series of novels, in which the gods were cast down to the world. The overgod Ao is responsible for it, and it is also called the Godswar.
Lore & Background
The theft of the Tablets of Fate, which list the gods and their roles, caused it: every god except Helm was cast down to Toril, and faith and magic ran wild. The first three novels, Shadowdale, Tantras and Waterdeep (1989), follow the Company of the Lynx (Kelemvor, Adon, Midnight and Cyric) as they search for the tablets. Afterwards Midnight became the new Mystra, Kelemvor the god of the dead, and Cyric took the portfolios of several evil gods. The novels and their matching modules were used to move the setting from first to second edition AD&D rules.
