Agnetha Fältskog
From Jönköping demos to a solo debut that topped Kvällstoppen before ABBA existed.
Agnetha Fältskog is the Swedish pop singer whose debut studio album shares her name, released in early 1968 through Cupol Records. Before joining ABBA, she had been performing with the local Jönköping dansband Bengt Engharts. Her career took a decisive turn when producer Little Gerhard heard a demo tape sent to Cupol Records in autumn 1967. Impressed by her voice and her self-composed song "Jag var så kär," he offered her a solo contract, separating her from the band. This decision launched her path as a solo artist prior to her global fame with ABBA.

Lore & Background
The journey began in autumn 1967 when Bengt Engharts sent a tape of demos to Cupol Records. Little Gerhard listened and was captivated specifically by "Jag var så kär," composed by Fältskog herself. He called her directly at the car firm where she worked, offering a recording contract solely for her as a solo singer. Her first session occurred on 16 October 1967 at Philips Studio in Stockholm, producing four tracks: "Jag var så kär," "Utan dej mitt liv går vidare," "Följ med mig," and "Slutet gott, allting gott."
The single "Jag var så kär" / "Följ avec mig" was released in November 1967. By January 1968, the tear-jerker "Jag var så kär" reached number three on the radio chart Svensktoppen. Following sales exceeding 80,000 copies, it topped the official sales chart Kvällstoppen. The album arrived in spring 1968, compiling these hits with new recordings like "Allting har förändrat sig" and "Snövit och de sju dvärgarna."
She also wrote "Försonade" for singer Gunnar Wiklund; although rejected by Melodifestivalen, it later appeared in the 2008 film Låt den rätte komma in.
Reader's Guide
To understand Agnetha Fältskog's pre-ABBA era, focus on her 1967–1968 solo output. Key data points include her debut session date (16 October 1967), the label (Cupol Records), and the specific tracklist from that first session. Note that of the 12 tracks recorded for the album, ten were released as singles in 1967–1968. While only two topped Kvällstoppen, five different songs charted on Svensktoppen in 1968 alone, often favoring her B-sides.
The album itself contains all previously issued single tracks plus new material like "Den jag väntat på." For collectors, the duet with Jörgen Edman released in 1968 is notable as it did not appear on the original album. Her songwriting contributions are central to this period; she composed most hits including "Jag var så kär," "Utan dej mitt liv går vidare," and "Allting har förändrat sig." The rejection of "Försonade" by Melodifestivalen is a specific historical footnote, as is its inclusion in the 2008 film Låt den rätte komma in. Re-issues are available on CD and iTunes.
