The saga ignites when a demonic star drifts into Earth's orbit and opens a rift in space, allowing the immortal Garlic Jr. to break free from his imprisonment inside the Dead Zone. He and his henchmen, the Spice Boys, infiltrate Kami's Lookout, capture Kami and Mr. Popo, and release the Black Water Mist, a vapor that unlocks the evil within a person. The Z-Fighters, realizing Goku remains stranded in deep space following his battle with Frieza, must face this supernatural crisis alone. Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, Krillin's then-girlfriend Maron and Gohan's pet dragon Icarus are the only ones unaffected and set out to stop him. Gohan destroys the star and sends him back into the Dead Zone, where he will remain trapped for all eternity.
