Logopenic progressive aphasia

Logopenic progressive aphasia (LPA) is a subtype of primary progressive aphasia. Its key clinical features are difficulty with naming objects and repeating sentences. The condition resembles conduction aphasia and involves shrinkage in the left posterior temporal cortex and inferior parietal lobule. The most common underlying cause is thought to be an atypical form of Alzheimer’s disease.

People with LPA can still produce speech, but their rate of speaking often slows down significantly because they struggle to find the right words. Over time, they may have trouble holding onto lengthy information, which makes understanding complex spoken language difficult. Behavioral changes such as irritability, anxiety, and agitation can also appear.

Compared to other forms of primary progressive aphasia, LPA is linked to distinct cognitive and behavioral patterns. Research shows that individuals with LPA perform worse on calculation tests than those with other subtypes. Many LPA patients, particularly those with Alzheimer’s pathology, also do poorly on memory tasks.

The condition results from damage to specific brain areas, namely the inferior parietal lobe and superior temporal regions. Naming difficulties arise from thinning of the inferior parietal lobe. Damage to the dorsal language pathways produces the characteristic language deficits seen in LPA.
