Anti-Life Equation

A mathematical proof that life is incarceration and freedom is folly.

The Anti-Life Equation is a fictional concept from DC Comics, defined variably across stories but commonly interpreted as a mathematical proof of life's futility. In Jack Kirby's Fourth World setting, it serves as a formula for total control over sentient minds, sought relentlessly by Darkseid. He believes fragments exist within humanity's subconscious, prompting him to send forces to Earth to retrieve them. While some versions describe it as a living entity or shadow-based deity, its core function remains the absolute domination of will, rendering those who possess it effectively 'not really alive' in the eyes of their masters.

Lore & Background

Jack Kirby originally established the Equation as a power to dominate all sentient and sapient races. It gained its name because if someone possesses absolute control over you, you are no longer truly alive. In various storylines, Darkseid discovers different components; for instance, Metron and Swamp Thing's attempt to breach the Source revealed that part of the formula is love. Martian Manhunter (vol. 2) #33 states Darkseid first became aware of it roughly 300 years ago after contacting Mars, theorizing a negative equivalent to their Life Equation.

The equation has been found in Sonny Sumo by the Forever People's Mother Box and held by Billion-Dollar Bates without aid. In Walt Simonson's Orion (2001), clones of Bates provided it to Darkseid and DeSaad, though Orion later learned that suppressing free will is inherently bad. The formula itself has been revealed as a sentient being capable of expressing itself to hosts.

Reader's Guide

Countermeasures are rare but specific. Drawing the New Genesis word for 'freedom' on one's face can counter the Equation, a method used by Mister Miracle and passed to allies after he broke free with Metron's help. Doctor Sivana invented a device allowing Lex Luthor to wrest control of Justifiers from Libra. In some versions, such as Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers: Mister Miracle, Darkseid inserts the formula into minds using a specific calculation: 'loneliness + alienation + fear + despair + self-worth ÷ mockery ÷ condemnation ÷ misunderstanding × guilt × shame × failure × judgment n=y where y=hope and n=folly.' This convinces victims that life and hope are pointless. In DCU continuity, the Equation is a sentient being; Mobius, once a Qwardian scientist named Mobius in the Anti-Matter Universe, fused with it to become the Anti-Monitor before forfeiting it upon Darkseid's death.
