It is also referred to as yellow spruce, West Virginia spruce, eastern spruce, and he-balsam. This perennial, shade-tolerant, late successional coniferous tree typically reaches 18 to 40 meters in height with a trunk diameter of about 60 centimeters under optimal conditions, though exceptional specimens can grow to 46 meters tall and 130 centimeters in diameter. It features a narrow conical crown, needle-like yellow-green leaves that are four-sided, curved, and sharp-pointed, and gray-brown bark that is thin and scaly, revealing a red-brown interior. The wood is light, soft, with narrow rings and a slight red tinge. Its cylindrical cones, which hang down from branches, are glossy red-brown with stiff scales.
