Pinus elliottii, commonly known as slash pine, is a conifer tree native to the coastal plain of the Southeastern United States. Its common name derives from the "slashes"—swampy ground overgrown with trees and bushes—that constitute its habitat. Other common names include swamp pine, yellow slash pine, and southern Florida pine. This fast-growing tree is not particularly long-lived for a pine, reaching ages up to 200 years, and can attain heights with a trunk diameter of notable size. Its needle-like leaves are very slender, occurring in clusters of two or three, and the glossy red-brown cones measure in length, each scale bearing a short, thick prickle. The tree is recognized for its conical shape and unusually high strength, especially for a pine; its wood has an average crush strength of 8,140 lb/in², exceeding many hardwoods such as white ash and black maple. While not as strong as black ironwood, slash pine’s lower density gives it a far greater strength-to-weight ratio. Slash pine can be distinguished from loblolly pine by its longer, glossier needles and larger red-brown cones, and from longleaf pine by its shorter, more slender needles and smaller cones with less broad scales. Two varieties are described: *P. e. var. elliottii*, ranging from South Carolina to central Florida with needles mostly in bundles of three and larger cones; and *P. e. var. densa* (South Florida slash pine), found in the pine rocklands of southern Florida and the Florida Keys, with needles nearly all in pairs, smaller cones, denser wood, a thicker taproot, and a seedling "grass stage" similar to longleaf pine. This variety is not frost tolerant. Recent genetic studies suggest the two varieties may not be more closely related to each other than to other southeastern pines, potentially warranting reclassification as separate species. Slash pine can hybridize with loblolly pine, sand pine, and longleaf pine.

Without regular fire intervals, the ecosystem can convert to denser mixed-hardwood canopies or rockland hammocks dominated by woody shrubs and invasive plants.
