The Batman vs. Dracula

Batman faces Count Dracula in an animated crossover.

Last updated

The Batman vs. Dracula is a direct-to-video animated feature that pits Batman against the vampire king in Gotham City.[1] The film was produced by the creators of the animated series The Batman.[1]

Making and release

The Batman vs. Dracula was released as a direct-to-video movie.[1] Teletoon was slated to air the feature in October 2009.[2][3] The film features Rino Romano as Batman and Peter Stormare as Dracula.[1] Kevin Michael Richardson voices the Joker, and Tom Kenny voices the Penguin.[1]

Tara Strong performs as journalist Vicky Vale.[1] The story involves the Penguin accidentally freeing Dracula in Gotham Cemetery.[1] Dracula then spreads vampirism across the city and targets Vicky Vale.[1] A sequel titled The Batman vs. Hush was planned but later scrapped.[4]

A planned sequel called The Batman vs. Hush, which would have featured Hush as the main antagonist alongside the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman, and Clayface, was in development for an extended period but ultimately canceled; prior to this cancellation, producer Alan Burnett expressed a desire to create one or two additional direct-to-video films based on The Batman.[4]

What the cited sources add

Maurice Cobbs of DVD Verdict called the film "exceptionally average" and said good points are not plentiful enough to overcome flaws.[5] Batman-on-Film gave the film a grade of B− and recommended it to Bat-fans.[6] Kevin L. Carvell of Cinema Crazed described it as a "really good and fun animated action horror combination."[7] Cobbs noted that the film emphasizes Batman's detective abilities and dedication to preserving life.[1]

Cobbs also wrote that Peter Stormare's Dracula chews scenery with a hokey Eurotrash accent.[1]
