Goosebumps (film)
A film adaptation of R. L. Stine's horror series.
Last updated
The film presents a fictional version of author R.L. Stine whose monsters become real when his manuscripts are opened.[1] The story follows a new boy in Madison who discovers Stine's secret and must help recapture the escaped creatures.[1] Jack Black portrays a fictionalized version of the author, and the actual R.L. Stine makes a cameo appearance as a drama teacher credited as "Hallway Player" and named Mr. Black.[2]
Making and release
In the mid-1990s, George A. Romero wrote a script adapting the first Goosebumps book, but it was rejected and kept at the University of Pittsburgh.[3] Columbia Pictures acquired the rights in 2008, with Neal Moritz and Deborah Forte producing.[4] Jack Black was cast in September 2013 to play a Stine-like author whose characters leap off the page.[5] In 1998, 20th Century Fox had Tim Burton attached to direct a Goosebumps film, but the project failed to advance because no suitable script could be found.[6]
Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the screenwriting team, chose not to adapt a single book; instead, they created a meta-story in which Stine's monsters become real.[7] The film's first public screening was its world premiere on June 24, 2015, at the CineEurope trade fair for film distributors in Barcelona, Spain.[8]
What the cited sources add
The film's budget of $58 million was co-financed by Village Roadshow and LStar Capital.[9] Sony's marketing chief Josh Greenstein called the number-one opening "a giant victory" in a crowded marketplace.[9] Jack Black promoted the film through viral online videos that received over 20 million views.[9] R.L. Stine told The Wrap that his main input on the script was ensuring it combined laughs and scares rather than being just a horror film.[10]
