The film is a children's comedy featuring the dim-witted character Ernest P. Worrell, whom a Washington Post critic called "the global village idiot"[1] It is the fourth film in the Ernest series and the final one under a multi-picture deal with Touchstone Pictures.[2]
Making and release
John Cherry directed the film, as he had previous entries in the series.[3] The project was first announced under the title Ernest Scared Stiff in the June 10 and July 22, 1991 editions of Variety.[3] Filming occurred in Nashville, Tennessee, from May through July 1991.[4] Buena Vista Pictures Distribution gave the film a theatrical release in the United States on October 11, 1991.[2]
During its debut weekend, the movie ranked fourth at the box office, earning $4.4 million across 1,782 theaters.[5] The film's total domestic gross in the United States was $14.1 million.[5] Touchstone Home Entertainment first issued the film on DVD on September 3, 2002.[6]
What the cited sources add
Varney and Cherry had to turn down a Chevrolet campaign due to exclusivity contracts with local car dealers.[1] Varney described his notoriety from the Ernest role as a "mixed blessing"[1] He sometimes wore disguises on dates to avoid being recognized by Ernest fans.[1] Varney won an Emmy in 1989 for Outstanding Performer in a children's series for Hey, Vern: It's Ernest!.[1]
Early Purity commercials received complaints because a wide-angle lens made Ernest appear looming, frightening some children.[1]
