Muppets Haunted Mansion is a Halloween special featuring the Muppets cast and celebrity cameos, with new music and spooky amusement for families.[1] Disney+ was the sole platform for the special's debut, which occurred on October 8, 2021.[2]
Making and release
Early attempts to produce a Muppets Halloween special date back to the early 1990s.[3] Following Jim Henson's death, his son Brian planned a Halloween special that was ultimately cancelled.[3] In March 2009, Disney announced a Halloween special that was later postponed and cancelled.[4] Ed Mitchell and Steve Morrell wrote the music, including three new songs and a cover.[5]
The development of a Muppets Halloween special tied to The Haunted Mansion was made public in May 2021.[6] The production schedule for the special consisted of eighteen days of filming during April 2021.[6] The cast was announced to include Geoff Keighley and Darren Criss, with Kelly Younger contributing as a co-writer.[7]
What the cited sources add
The Deadline Hollywood announcement states the special features the Muppets cast, celebrity cameos, and new music.[1] The Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution release lists Will Arnett as The Ghost Host, Yvette Nicole Brown as The Hearse Driver, and Taraji P. Henson as The Bride.[8] The same source notes Edward Asner appears as Claude, and the special includes a cover of "Dancing in the Moonlight"[8] John Serba of Decider described the special as "trifling silliness" that inspires some smiles.[9][10]
W. Andrew Powell of The GATE called it "one of the best, and most entertaining Muppet experiences in years"[11] Victoria Rose Caister of Game Rant stated the spooky elements are done in a very nice way.[12]
