Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
A stop-motion parody of classic monster films.
Last updated
The film is a stop-motion animated feature starring the cheese-loving inventor Wallace and his silent dog Gromit as pest controllers.[1] It was directed by Nick Park and Steve Box, and features voice performances by Peter Sallis, Helena Bonham Carter, and Ralph Fiennes.[1] Nick Park and Steve Box, the film's directors, have described their work as the "first vegetarian horror film" in the world.[2]
Making and release
In March 2000, it was announced that Wallace and Gromit would star in their own feature film, which would have been Aardman's next project after The Tortoise and the Hare.[3] The film had its worldwide premiere in Sydney, Australia, on 4 September 2005.[4] A promotional tie-in with Burger King was made shortly before the film's release.[4] Market research caused the rejection of the original title Wallace & Gromit: The Great Vegetable Plot, leading to a name change.[5]
In theaters, the feature was paired with a short film featuring the penguins from the Madagascar series, titled The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper.[6] A re-release for the 20th anniversary took place in UK cinemas during April 2025.[7]
What the cited sources add
Paul Arendt of BBC News praised the film's "sheer good humour" and gave it five stars out of five. Empire magazine ranked the film 51st on their list of the 100 best British films in 2016.[1][8][9] O'Hara noted that Sallis was 85 years old when his lines for the film were recorded.[10] The Empire review stated the film "positively brims with ideas and energy" and includes references to Hammer horrors and The Incredible Hulk.[11] Peter Sallis's voice work was recognized by Helen O'Hara of Empire magazine, who placed it on a list called "The 50 Greatest Voice Performances in Movies".[9][10]
