The Haunted Mansion (2003 film)

A family trapped in a haunted mansion with ghostly inhabitants.

Last updated

The film is a family comedy based on the Disneyland ride of the same name in Anaheim, California.[1] It grossed $182.3 million worldwide against a $90 million budget.[2] Over time, the movie gained a devoted fanbase, even though it was initially met with poor critical reception.[2]

Making and release

Disney officially gave the go-ahead for the project in January 2002, with David Berenbaum providing the screenplay.[3] Sable Ranch in Santa Clarita, California served as the location for filming the exterior of the mansion.[4] The primary structure was built over several weeks, while computer generation was used for the cupola and chimneys.[4] New Orleans and its neighboring regions were the locations for the remainder of the shoot.[4]

Both practical methods and digital techniques were employed to create the ghostly effects.[5] Buena Vista Pictures Distribution handled the United States release, which occurred on November 26, 2003.[2]

What the cited sources add

The ScreenRant account notes that interior filming took place at Barwick Studios in Los Angeles, with each room replicating the Disneyland ride's ambiance.[1] The same source states that the façade and graveyard were constructed at Sable Ranch, with above-ground graves establishing the New Orleans setting.[1] The mansion was made to look bigger through CGI, which added the dome and turrets.[1] The Collider article lists the film among Disney's biggest box-office bombs.[6]
