The 2023 film "Haunted Mansion" is a reboot adaptation of the Disney theme park ride, directed by Justin Simien and produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback.[1][2] It grossed $117.5 million worldwide against a production budget of over $150 million, and Deadline Hollywood calculated its net losses at $117 million.[3][4]
Making and release
In July 2010, Guillermo del Toro was announced as writer and producer for a reboot adaptation that would be set in a heightened reality.[5] By August 2012, Del Toro submitted a final draft intended for a PG-13 rating, but by July 2013 he was no longer director, remaining as co-writer and executive producer.[6] In August 2020, Katie Dippold was hired to write a new screenplay after Disney decided Del Toro's script was too scary for family audiences.[1][7] Principal photography ran from October 4, 2021 to late February 2022 in New Orleans and Atlanta, with visual effects by DNEG and Industrial Light & Magic.[8]
The film had its world premiere at Disneyland on July 15, 2023, where cast members could not attend due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.[9]
What the cited sources add
Malik also noted that the film's excessive product placements felt like "a scavenger hunt of how many brand names audiences could pick up on"[4]
