The 2016 animated film Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom adapts the graphic novel of the same name, which itself draws from the Cthulhu Mythos created by horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. This movie is the first screen adaptation of the Howard Lovecraft graphic novel series. The story follows young Howard Lovecraft, who, after visiting his father at Arkham Sanitarium, accidentally uses the Necronomicon to open a portal to a strange world filled with creatures.
The voice cast includes Ron Perlman as Shoggoth, Christopher Plummer as Dr. Jeffrey West, Jane Curtin as Algid Bunk, Doug Bradley as Nyarlathotep, and Scott McNeil as Barry and the Govlins, among others. The film was followed by two sequels: Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom (2017) and Howard Lovecraft and the Kingdom of Madness (2018). The original graphic novel trilogy, written by Bruce Brown and illustrated by Renzo Podesta, began publication in 2009, with sequels in 2011 and 2013, and a collected edition in 2014.
In March 2016, Ron Perlman and Christopher Plummer were announced as cast members, and Shout! Factory acquired the distribution rights.
