The 1960s Golden Age

A national title, a cup and Germany's first European trophy.

Borussia Dortmund began the 1960s as Oberliga West runners-up in 1960-61 and 1962-63, and won the last national championship before the Bundesliga in 1963, which made them one of its first members. Friedhelm Konietzka scored the league's first goal for them.

Reader's Guide

Dortmund won the DFB-Pokal in 1965 and then the 1966 European Cup Winners' Cup, beating Liverpool 2-1 after extra time; it was the first European club title won by a German team. They also finished second in the Bundesliga in 1965-66. The success showed that the Stadion Rote Erde was too small and led to the plans for the Westfalenstadion.
