From runners-up in 1992 to European champions in 1997.
Ottmar Hitzfeld took over at Borussia Dortmund after the club finished tenth in the 1991 Bundesliga and Horst Koppel was sacked. In his first season, 1992, Dortmund came second, missing the title only because VfB Stuttgart won their last game.
