Relegation in 1972, a new stadium in 1974.
The 1970s were hard years for Borussia Dortmund: money troubles, relegation from the Bundesliga in 1972, and in 1974 the opening of the Westfalenstadion. The club came back up in 1976.

The financial problems continued into the 1980s. In 1986 Dortmund finished 16th and only stayed up by winning a third play-off game against Fortuna Koln. The next real success was the 4-1 DFB-Pokal final win over Werder Bremen in 1989.
