Kingdom of Mediah
The Bareeds monarchy that ruled Mediah until merchants made it a republic.
The Kingdom of Mediah ruled the region of Mediah for most of its known history. It was headed by the House of Bareeds from Mediah Castle rather than from a city, and only in its last years from the new capital, Altinova. Today it no longer exists: it was replaced by the Republic of Mediah.

Background
Mediah stayed neutral in the long war between its neighbours Calpheon and Valencia. On the advice of the merchant Neruda Shen it signed trade treaties with both sides, later drew close to Valencia, encouraged its state religion Aalism and agreed a military alliance with it without joining the war. Profits from the Shen Merchant Guild paid for a harbour, a fortress and finally the walled capital Altinova, finished in 271 after years of typhoons, droughts and sandstorms that drove barbarian tribes into southern Mediah. In 277, during the Three Days of Darkness, Illezra burned Mediah Castle and most of the royal family died. When barbarians and Sezec Hunters attacked Altinova in 280, the people turned to Neruda Shen, who took control and renamed the state the Republic of Mediah.
