The family Bucorvidae has been proposed to contain the genus Bucorvus, which was introduced in 1830 by French naturalist René Lesson as a subgenus for the Abyssinian ground hornbill. The generic name combines Buceros (the Asian hornbill genus) with corvus, Latin for 'raven.' A molecular phylogenetic study from 2013 found that Bucorvus is sister to all other hornbills, with an estimated divergence in the early Miocene, around 22 million years ago.

The two species in Bucorvus are the Abyssinian ground hornbill, ranging from Senegal east to Ethiopia, and the southern ground hornbill, found in southern and East Africa. Unlike other hornbills, these birds are ground-dwelling and carnivorous, feeding on insects, snakes, other birds, amphibians, and even tortoises.
