The Accipitridae is a family of birds of prey within the order Accipitriformes, one of four families in that order. These birds range from small to large, all possessing strongly hooked bills, and their body shapes vary depending on what they eat. Their diet is broad, spanning insects up to medium-sized mammals; many species also scavenge on carrion, and a few eat fruit. Accipitrids are found nearly everywhere on Earth—on every continent except Antarctica, plus many oceanic islands—and some species migrate. The family includes 256 species, organized into 12 subfamilies and 75 genera. Familiar birds like buzzards, eagles, harriers, hawks, kites, and Old World vultures all belong here. Wingspans swing from a modest 39 cm in the little sparrowhawk to over 300 cm in the cinereous and Himalayan vultures. Even the structural details vary enormously: wing chord lengths span from 113 to 890 mm, and culmen lengths range from 11 to 88 mm. All share the signature strongly hooked bill, yet their overall body plans shift dramatically depending on diet. Until the 14th century, New Zealand's now-extinct Haast's eagle pushed these limits further, with the largest females estimated at 140 cm and 15 to 16.5 kg. In terms of body mass variation, no other bird family rivals the accipitrids.

The fossil record of Accipitridae stretches back to the Early Eocene, roughly 50 million years ago, though those earliest remains are so fragmentary that they resist confident placement within the family's phylogeny. From the latter Eocene onward, around 35 million years ago, the record becomes substantially more complete, and modern genera are well documented by the Early Oligocene, approximately 30 million years ago. Fossils surface across the globe: Milvoides from Late Eocene England, Aquilavus and Palaeocircus from France, Aviraptor from Poland, Palaeastur and Promilio from the Agate Fossil Beds in Sioux County, USA, and Pengana from Riversleigh in Australia. The geographic spread suggests the group rapidly achieved a worldwide distribution, possibly even extending to Antarctica around 25 million years ago. The origin likely lies on either side of the Atlantic, which at that time was only 60 to 80 percent its current width. More recent fossils include Garganoaetus from the Early Pliocene of Italy's Gargano Peninsula and Amplibuteo spanning the Late Pliocene of Peru to the Late Pleistocene of southern North America and Cuba.
