They are characterized by a long, down-curved bill, often brightly colored and sometimes bearing a horny casque. They are notable for having fused first and second neck vertebrae, a trait also seen in some parrots and woodpeckers, which likely provides a stable platform for carrying the bill. Hornbills are omnivorous, monogamous breeders that nest in natural cavities, and several insular species are threatened with extinction, mainly in Southeast Asia.

Hornbills show considerable variation in size and colors. The smallest species is the black dwarf hornbill, at 99.1 g and 32 cm in length. The largest and most massive species appears to be the southern ground hornbill, which can weigh up to 6.3 kg and span about 180 cm across the wings. Males are often larger than females, but in some species females are similar in size or even larger, with the extent of sexual dimorphism varying by species and body part. The most distinctive feature is the heavy bill, supported by powerful neck muscles and fused vertebrae, used in fighting, preening, nest construction, and catching prey. The casque, a hollow structure on the upper mandible, may serve as a resonator for calls or, in the helmeted hornbill, as a battering ram.

Most are arboreal, but the large ground hornbills are terrestrial birds of open savanna.
