A recently validated family of Malagasy songbirds.
The Bernieridae, also known as the tetrakas or Malagasy warblers, are a recently validated family of songbirds endemic to Madagascar. Formally named in 2010, the family currently consists of eleven species in eight genera of small forest birds. Their monophyly was proposed as early as 1934, but traditional assignments to other families—such as Pycnonotidae (bulbuls), Timaliidae (Old World babblers), and the Old World warblers—were maintained due to convergent evolution and lack of dedicated research. It was not until the analysis of mtDNA and nDNA sequence data that the long-proposed grouping was accepted.

The Bernieridae were formally named in 2010, but their monophyly was first proposed in 1934 by Jean Théodore Delacour. For decades, the birds were mistakenly placed in wastebin taxa such as Pycnonotidae, Timaliidae, and the Old World warblers, due to convergent evolution and a lack of dedicated research. It was only through analysis of mtDNA cytochrome b and 16S rRNA, as well as nDNA RAG-1 and RAG-2 exon sequence data, that the grouping gained acceptance.
The first phylogeny to include all eleven recognized species was performed in 2010 by Cibois et al. This phylogeny suggests that the genus Xanthomixis is paraphyletic, with X. tenebrosa more closely related to Crossleyia xanthophrys than to other Xanthomixis species. Additionally, Bernieria madagascariensis appears to be composed of three deeply diverging lineages that may each deserve species status, though official taxonomic descriptions have yet to be published.
Several Bernierids are very poorly known and were described only recently: Appert's tetraka in 1972 and the cryptic warbler in 1996. Appert's tetraka and the dusky tetraka are threatened by habitat loss and listed as vulnerable. Most members live in the humid rainforests of eastern Madagascar, though a few are found in the drier southwest. They feed on insects and form mixed-species feeding flocks of up to six species.
