Aramidae
Bird family with one living species and several fossil relatives.
The bird family Aramidae belongs to the order Gruiformes. Today, only one living species exists: the limpkin (*Aramus guarauna*). However, the fossil record contains several other members, including *Papulavis annae* from France’s Eocene, *Aramus paludigrus* from Colombia’s Middle Miocene, and *Badistornis aramus* from South Dakota’s Oligocene. A European Oligocene fossil, *Parvigrus pohli*, shows a mix of traits found in both limpkins and cranes. It was much smaller than either group and had proportions more like a rail. In the study describing this fossil, Gerald Mayr proposed that *Parvigrus pohli* resembled the ancestral species of the Grues (the group containing cranes and limpkins). He suggested that limpkins evolved their extremely long bills as a specialization for feeding on snails, while cranes developed long legs for walking and probing in open grasslands. Another fossil, *Anisolornis* from Argentina’s Miocene, was first described as a phorusrhacid but has since been placed in Aramidae, though it has also been linked to Galliformes and Psophiidae. *Gnotornis aramiellus*, from South Dakota’s Oligocene, was originally assigned to Aramidae but may actually be a heron. Two other early supposed members, *Aminornis* and *Loncornis* from Argentina’s early Oligocene, are no longer considered part of Aramidae: *Loncornis* appears to be a misidentified mammal bone, and *Aminornis* has been reclassified under Anseriformes.
