Synopsis

The series follows the Mellop teenagers—brothers Michael and Jason, and their sister Samantha—whose mother died a year earlier. Their father Bill runs the family business, 'The Lazy Daisy Nursery', with help from absent-minded Aunt Josey. The teens repeatedly encounter strange events that their father and aunt fail to notice or believe. Another family, the Dumps, frequently interferes: father Bernie is a trailer trash entrepreneur, his daughter Harmony is conniving, and his nephew Darren is annoying. The Dumps try to exploit the Mellops' adventures for selfish gain.

The first season revolves around the 'Search for the Grand Baby' plot. An alien race of children called Moonlings lives on the moon. Their leader, the Grand Baby, is near death and has no heir, so a great power containing all his psychic and magical abilities is sent to Earth to choose a new leader. The power hits the Mellops' crystal punchbowl and splits, striking several household items. The Mellop teens then discover powers tied to those items: a T-Shirt of invisibility, a baseball cap of flight, a vacuum cleaner of time travel, and toothpaste of linguistic ability. The Dumps soon learn of the powers and scheme to acquire them for business ventures. Michael Mellop, smitten with Harmony, often helps the Dumps obtain the powers.

The Moonlings realize the mistake and dispatch two elite emissaries, Gamma-Jane and Alpha-Ralph, in a spaceship disguised as a VW Kombi. Taking human form as Jane and Ralph, they wear ridiculous outfits and drive around Sydney asking confused citizens if they know who the new Grand Baby is. Their investigation eventually leads them to the Mellops' household.
