Significant objects and locations
The Stave is a baton used by most Guardians, capable of communication across worlds, radio functions, electronic manipulation, and firing lasers that kill Welkin and Krellicks. The Orb is a smooth white sphere; one exists for each world. When touched by a person with full Guardian blood outside its original world, it replays that world's history on its surface. When in its original world, the Orb transports the person to the Reading Room, acting as a key. Orbs also hide Guardian blood from Welkin and Krellicks. The Reading Room is the central repository of all Parallax knowledge, recording both good and bad times of stories and creatures, and serves as the hub for world transportation. Purple Water is the key to Betti's blandishment; when poured into a world's water supply, it turns anyone outside the 17.65% personality average of that world into water vapour. The Francis Cam is a communication link between four worlds—Techno, Forest, Ben's, and Hippie World—used to report Betti sightings and Spy Boy. Purple eyes are an alternate eye colour for Betti and Spy Boy, appearing when they lie or become angry, though their true purpose is unknown.
Worlds
Ben's World, the red world, is considered the normal world and links to Katherine's World through an old drain and to Techno World through a chicken shed. Different points on the parallax at the old drain allow travel to Forest and Desert Worlds, and a portal in Mr Dawes's shed connects to Garden World with the combination 1-1-11. Katherine's World, the blue world, is formal and strict, where Ben discovers a sister and his biological father. It links to Ben's World via two large rocks and to Hippie World between two bookcases at a library; pushing parallax points at the rocks also reaches Forest World, and a beach portal leads to Betti's tent in Desert World. Francis' Hippie World, the yellow world, is filled with hippies; its only known portal is through an old Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi van, linking to Katherine's World and Forest World with the right combination. Una's Techno World, the silver world, is highly advanced with a motto of 'Tomorrow's technology, at yesterday's prices.' Its portal to Ben's World is at a hi-tech rubbish tip, and another at an abandoned office building, accessible by typing a password, leads to Garden World. Mundi's Forest World, the green world, is environmentally conscious with its Werrinup built on towers above the forest floor to minimise impact. It is infested by Krellicks, and its tree portal links to Ben's, Katherine's, or Techno World depending on the symbol combination. A rock portal outside Mrs Dawes's house on the forest floor is guarded by Krellicks and used as a nest.
Side Doors
In the world of Parallax, Side Doors are one-way portals that cannot be used to return. Ben and Katherine found extra portal lights after Ben pushed a button on a stave in the Reading Room. Mrs. Dawes sent them to her brother, Mr. Dawes, who described Side Doors and their single-use rule. The only known Side Door is Mr. Dawes' shed, which connects to a seat in Garden World.
