Plot
The elderly owner gives her an oval mirror, saying it is meant for her. Louisa writes her name on a book for Jo to read, and when Jo tries to write her name on the mirror, the pen begins to disappear into it. After Louisa is called away, Jo investigates and is accidentally pulled through the mirror into Louisa's bedroom in 1919. The girls discover they can visit each other's times whenever they want, provided the mirror is in the same place and aligned identically in both years. In 1919, Louisa's father is a senior official in the New Zealand Government's Health Department, and the family lives in a mansion with servants. Jo, the daughter of an Australian school principal at a New Zealand college, lives in a school residential building that is the same house as Louisa's home, and the girls share the same bedroom. They become firm friends and become entangled in intrigue. During an archaeological dig at Jo's school, a container from 1919 is damaged, spraying two students with toxic waste. The students become extremely ill, and Jo fears her travels through the mirror caused the sickness.
Sequel
A second series of 26 episodes, titled Mirror, Mirror II, aired in 1997 with a completely new story and set of characters. The only link to the original is a time-travelling mirror in New Zealand, but the rules differ: in the sequel, anyone could go through the mirror, whereas in the first series only children could travel.
