The European Space Information System (ESIS) project was initiated in 1988 as a service for homogeneous access to heterogeneous databases on the network. It pre-dated the World Wide Web and linked databases of the European Space Agency with centres of excellence including the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg, the European Southern Observatory, the Canadian Astronomical Data Centre, and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. ESIS provided building blocks and prototypes for later Virtual Observatory projects.
