Gameplay

The gameplay is similar to its predecessor, with Spyro traveling linearly through levels and defeating a boss at the end of each stage. A greater emphasis is placed on exploration and puzzle-solving. Spyro learns different elemental breaths—fire, ice, electricity, and earth—from the Chronicler, whom he meets in dreams. These breaths serve as tools against enemies. Spyro can also use furies, large blasts of elemental magic, and must collect a certain number of purple gems to use these skills. The Chronicler teaches Spyro the ability to slow down time, called dragon time, which helps him reach fast-moving platforms and defeat enemies more easily. Forty quills are hidden throughout levels, each quill granting five pieces of concept art.

Synopsis

The Eternal Night continues the storyline from A New Beginning, which ended with the defeat of Cynder, a black dragon serving the Dark Master. A new antagonist, Gaul the Ape King, rises to power and intends to resurrect the Dark Master on the Night of Eternal Darkness. Spyro follows Cynder through the swamp surrounding the Dragon Temple and asks her not to leave. Cynder apologizes for her past actions and says she wishes to find where she belongs, believing she does not belong at the temple. She runs off, leaving Spyro and Sparx alone. Soon after, the temple is attacked by apes. After Spyro repels the attack, Ignitus, the dragon leader and master of fire, sends Spyro to find a tree that Spyro saw in a vision. Ignitus also seeks help against the apes. Spyro searches for the tree and for the Chronicler, who asks Spyro in the same vision to find him. When Spyro finds the tree, it turns into a tree monster called Arborick and attacks him. Although Arborick is killed, Spyro is captured by pirates and taken aboard their ship for gladiatorial combat. After defeating a third enemy in the arena, Spyro is made to fight Cynder, also captured by the pirates. Before they can plan an escape, the pirate ship is attacked by the apes, who capture Cynder. Spyro escapes the ship and defeats the pirate captain, Skabb. He then discovers that the apes have established a base on the Mountain of Malefor, also known as the Well of Souls, to revive the Dark Master using the lunar alignment called the Night of Eternal Darkness. He also learns they are keeping Cynder prisoner, hoping to turn her to their side again.
