Chris Moeller and Chuck Austen created two short animations that were posted online, and this series draws from them.[1] CinéGroupe and the Sci Fi Channel jointly produced the show.[1]

Making and release

In 1997, Chris Moeller met Chuck Austen and pitched their idea for a science fiction comedy to animation studio Film Roman.[2] In 2002, CinéGroupe acquired the rights to the five-minute short Love and Darph and approached animator Bernie Denk to direct the series.[3] Bernie Denk's team worked on preproduction in Montreal while the Malaysian studio Shanghai Cartoon worked on animation using Autodesk 3ds Max software.[3] The character Chode made his debut in a 1994 short film called "Wisconsin."[2]

The production team selected keyframe animation because it offered superior quality and greater control over the animation process.[3] Canadian viewers could watch the series on Space in 2004, and later on Teletoon starting in August 2006.[1] For the third season, Teletoon helped fund its creation and broadcast it in 2007.[4]

What the cited sources add

Adult Swim broadcast the series in Latin America.[5] On March 25, 2008, Anchor Bay put out a DVD of the 75-minute, unrated film "Tripping the Rift: The Movie."[6] The film's plot centers on Chode's birthday celebration, which leads Darph Bobo to send a time-traveling android clown to kill Chode.[6]
