Captain Future is a science‑fiction character whose stories were developed between 1940 and 1951 and later adapted into a 1978–79 Japanese anime by Toei Animation.[1][2]
Making and release
The series began when scientist Roger Newton, his wife Elaine, and colleague Simon Wright left Earth for a Moon laboratory to escape the criminal Victor Corvo.[3] In the late 1980s, Harmony Gold dubbed the first four‑part story as an edited TV movie titled "Captain Future".[4] A Japanese Blu‑ray box was released in September 2016 (Box 1) and November 2016 (Box 2), and a German "Limited Collectors Edition" Blu‑ray box followed in December 2016.[5] The editors Mort Weisinger and Leo Margulies, who worked for Better Publications, are the actual creators of the character; Edmond Hamilton, despite writing the majority of the stories, did not create him.[6]
Toei Animation, a Japanese company, produced a 53-episode anime television series in 1978, which was the year after Hamilton died; this series adapted 13 of the original stories.[7] ZIV International released an English-dubbed video version of the second story arc's four episodes in the early 1980s, calling it "The Adventures of Captain Future".[4] In February 2025, Toei Animation granted permission to French artist Alexis Tallone and author Sylvian Runberg to produce a comic adaptation of the first Captain Future story.[8][9]
What the cited sources add
The futuremania.de account notes that the anime's Comet has three engine groups and a photon drive, unlike the original novel's single rocket nozzle.[10] According to the futuremania.de comparison, the anime adds a scene where Captain Future shoots a cigar from Daumer's mouth, which does not appear in the novel.[11] The belial.fr site describes the Captain Future series as laying the foundations for a popular sub‑culture that later influenced Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Star Trek.[1]
