Masters of the Universe is an American animated superhero fantasy television series created by showrunner Kevin Smith and produced by Mattel Television and Powerhouse Animation Studios.[1] It is a direct sequel to the 1983–1985 Filmation series, ignoring She-Ra: Princess of Power and The New Adventures of He-Man.[1] The series stars Chris Wood, Mark Hamill, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and others, and follows Eternia after a battle between He-Man and Skeletor.[1]

Making and release

Netflix announced two Masters of the Universe projects in December 2019: an adult-oriented anime sequel and a CGI children's series.[2] Kevin Smith officially announced Masters of the Universe: Revelation at the 2019 Power-Con convention, serving as showrunner and executive producer.[3] Dark Horse Comics and Mattel released a four-issue prequel comic miniseries, with the first issue on July 7, 2021.[4] Powerhouse Animation Studios was the studio chosen to handle the animation, with their work influenced by Japanese anime.[5]

The series' musical score was created by Bear McCreary.[6] A second series, Masters of the Universe: Revolution, was revealed by Netflix in June 2022 and became available on January 25, 2024.[7] Chris Wood voiced Prince Adam/He-Man and Mark Hamill voiced Skeletor in the initial cast lineup.[8] For Masters of the Universe: Revolution, the role of Teela was taken over by Melissa Benoist, who replaced Sarah Michelle Gellar.[8]

On July 23, 2021, the same day the series premiered, an aftershow called Revelations: The Masters of the Universe Revelation Aftershow also started.[9]

What the cited sources add

Adlakha of Polygon noted that Revelation tells a continuous story over its first five episodes, unlike the episodic original series.[10] Adlakha also stated that Revelation upends Eternia's status quo and focuses on supporting characters like Teela, Orko, and Evil-Lyn.[10] Screen Rant reported that the final scene of Revolution part 1 hints at She-Ra's arrival, using the alter ego "Despara" from previous continuities.[11] Comic Book Resources explained that Despara first appeared in a 2012 comic, and her action figure was released in 2016 as part of the Masters of the Universe Classics line.[12]

TheWrap reported that Smith announced the series at a convention in August 2019, saying he was "Eternia-ly grateful" to Mattel TV and Netflix.[13] Collider confirmed that Revolution was announced during Netflix's Geeked Week 2022, with a focus on the battle between He-Man and Skeletor.[14]
