Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

Five teenage pilots rebel against Earth's oppressive Alliance.

Last updated

From April 7, 1995 to March 29, 1996, the TV Asahi network in Japan broadcast all 49 episodes of the series.[1] Video games and multiple manga adaptations were created based on the series.[1]

Making and release

Originally, the series was meant to be titled Gundam Meteor after "Operation Meteor."[2] Gundam Wing was a huge ratings winner for Toonami, often outperforming veteran series such as Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon.[3] The concept of featuring five central characters in Gundam Wing was inspired by the earlier series Mobile Fighter G Gundam.[2] A transforming Gundam that could assume a plane-like shape was a suggestion from Bandai; this idea resulted in the Wing Gundam and its alternate "Bird Mode" configuration.[2]

The staff attributes the show's appeal to female viewers to its greater emphasis on drama rather than on mecha.[2] Katsuyuki Sumizawa, one of the writers, found crafting the story challenging because he had to delegate tasks to other team members, unlike when he writes novels alone.[2] Heero Yuy ultimately became the main character, replacing the originally planned protagonist Duo Maxwell.[2]

What the cited sources add

A commemorative video titled "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing – Operation 30th –" was released, directed by Toru Iwasawa.[4] The video features new mobile suits and characters not seen in the original anime, including the "Cloaked Custom" and Adin Lowe.[4] The film Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz was scheduled for a theatrical release again.[4] Right Stuf released the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Collector's Ultra Edition in December 2017, including a bonus disc with the "Frozen Teardrop" picture drama and cast interviews.[5]

For the 30th anniversary, a new manga series was created through a collaboration between Sakura Asagi and Katsuyuki Sumisawa.[4]
