The Midnight Gospel
A spacecaster interviews residents of simulated worlds on the brink of disaster.
Last updated
The Midnight Gospel follows a spacecaster named Clancy Gilroy who travels through a multiverse simulator to interview residents of bizarre worlds on the brink of disaster.[1] Netflix ended the show after its first season, a fact Trussell announced in June 2022.[2]
Making and release
Pendleton Ward heard about Duncan Trussell's podcast from a friend while working on Adventure Time.[3] Around 2013, Trussell received an email from Ward praising his podcast.[3] In 2018, Ward approached Trussell again with a rough concept using a podcast conversation about drug addiction over an animatic of a zombie invasion.[4] Netflix gave the go-ahead for eight episodes in 2019, and they became available to watch on April 20, 2020.[5]
Ward and Trussell put together a crew of about 190 individuals at Titmouse to produce the episodes.[6] Trussell recalled that Netflix executives were the ones who proposed the April 20 release date, which is both his birthday and a day known for cannabis-related festivities.[7]
What the cited sources add
Trussell explained that during his podcasts, he sometimes experiences a complete shift in his understanding because a guest shares something entirely new to him.[7] The program's name originates from the positive meaning of "gospel"; Trussell noted that "'Gospel' means good news".[8][6] Ward was motivated to return to television animation by the lengthy, conversational audio recordings Trussell produced.[7] The final episode features a profound conversation about the wonder of life, the pain inherent in existence, and the sorrow caused by death.[9]
