Making and release
In August 2014, Matsumoto launched a retelling manga titled Captain Harlock: Dimensional Voyage, illustrated by Kōichi Shimahoshi, to celebrate his 60th debut anniversary.[2] Seven Seas published the series as three large trim hardcover omnibus editions under the title Captain Harlock: The Classic Collection.[3] The first issue of Space Pirate Captain Harlock hit comic shops on June 9, 2021.[4] An English dubbed version of four episodes of the 1978 TV series saw limited U.S. release in 1981, produced by ZIV International.[5]
Play Comic magazine ran the manga from January 1977 through June 1979.[1] Toei Animation produced a 1978 television anime adaptation of the series, with Rintaro serving as director.[6] A movie with the same title as the series, an animated feature, came out in 2013.[6] A sequel comic, created by Jérôme Alquié (who both wrote and drew it) in partnership with Matsumoto, started its publication run in 2021 under Ablaze Comics.[7][4]
What the cited sources add
The Harmony Gold dub was written by watching episodes with the sound off and making up new dialogue, by Macek's own admission.[8] In that dub, Harlock is no longer a pirate, and the Earth government has trumped-up charges of piracy against him.[8] The Malibu Graphics Collectors' Video from the early 1990s was advertised as "never-before-seen" and "completely unedited" but was badly mastered with audio and video out of sync.[9][10] The Malibu Graphics video featured false advertising, including a blond Harlock on the back cover and a green Arcadia ship.[10]
