Tatsunoko Production was the studio behind the Japanese science fiction anime television series Super Dimension Fortress Macross.[1] From October 1982 until June 1983, the program was broadcast in Japan.[1]
Making and release
The original name for the Macross project was Battle City Megaload, but a compromise was made with the title Macross due to its similar pronunciation to Macbeth in Japanese.[2][3] Originally proposed in 1980 and inspired by Mobile Suit Gundam, the show was created by Studio Nue from an original concept by Shoji Kawamori.[4] By 1981 Wiz had gone out of business, and Studio Nue bought the rights and searched for a new sponsor.[5] Big West, an advertising agency, agreed to sponsor the project and entered a partnership with Tatsunoko Production.[5]
The show debuted on 3 October 1982 with only three episodes made, and its success convinced Big West to extend the episode count to 36.[6] Animation work was contracted to studios including Artland, AIC, and Gainax.[7] In 2001, AnimEigo sub-licensed the series in North America and released it unedited on DVD.[8] The main spacecraft's name, frequently abbreviated to Macross, is what the series title uses.[2]
The "Wiz" group, the initial sponsor, desired a comedic outer space show, which conflicted with Studio Nue's preferred space opera approach.[9]
What the cited sources add
The Compendium states that Studio Nue portrayed the war in the first series and the movie Do You Remember Love?[10] According to Anime News Network, in 2008 Haruhiko Mikimoto began drawing a new manga titled The Super Dimension Fortress Macross The First for Macross Ace magazine.[11] That manga features the star of the original story, Lynn Minmay.[11] Anime News Network reported that the second volume of Macross Ace magazine shipped in June 2009 with a new manga series based on the franchise.[12]
The South China Morning Post account states that Kawamori left his mark on children worldwide as one of the original mecha designers for toys included in Hasbro's Transformers line.[13] According to the Macross Compendium, the conflict is designated Space War I and was fought between Earth's U.N. Forces and the 118th Boddole Zer Main Fleet of the Zentradi's Golg Main Fleet.[10]
