Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman
A reality competition hosted by an animated dog.
Last updated
Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman, also called Fetch!, is a PBS Kids Go! show mixing live-action and animation for kids aged 6 to 10. The animated dog Ruff Ruffman hosts this reality competition, giving tasks to real children.
It ran 100 episodes over five seasons from May 29, 2006, to November 4, 2010, with 30 contestants. A planned sixth season was canceled due to funding shortages. Its theme song won an Emmy in June 2008.
Premise
Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman is a reality game show for kids aged 10 to 14. Contestants earn points by completing tasks, which are given ahead of time or on the spot by Ruff or his helpers. These tasks often require learning something new, like astronomy, engineering, biology, or math. Unlike typical competition shows, no one gets eliminated until the final episode.
Instead, a points system tracks performance across each challenge. In the season finale, the final scores are tallied, and a series of elimination challenges in the studio decide the winner. Contestants who stay in the studio take part in the Half-Time Quiz Show, where Ruff asks up to ten questions with a time limit based on the field challenges. Those on location can earn up to 100 points per challenge, while studio contestants can earn up to 50 points in the quiz.
Ruff also hands out Bone-us points, usually 5 or 10, to standout players. The most points earned in a single episode is 125, set by Brian, Noah, and Khalil in season one, episode five. In season four, contestants could earn half points, like 5151/2. The winner gets the Grand Prize, which changes each season, plus a spot on the Fetch Wall of Fame.
Characters
Ruff Ruffman, voiced by Jim Conroy, is the host and main character. He dislikes cats and considers dogs superior, but makes an exception for his boss, Blossom. Blossom, whose full name is Princess Blossom Pepperdoodle Von Yum Yum, is a mute black cat. She begins as Ruff's intern in season 2 and is promoted to supervisor in season 3; Ruff initially dislikes her but later forms a close bond.
Chet, a brown mouse, becomes Ruff's intern in season 3, replacing Blossom. Chet is mute and appears to lack eyes and limbs, yet can perform impossible feats like completing an obstacle course in seconds or building a jet engine. Henry is Ruff's unseen boss who calls on the Henry Hotline and controls the show's budget. Murray, one of Ruff's cousins, handles behind-the-scenes technical work and is often blamed for problems; he is portrayed by a real Basset Hound and stops appearing at the start of season 4.
Tank, a bulldog, replaces Murray in season 4 and wears a Fetch! shirt and earmuffs, proving reliable. Grandma Ruffman, voiced by Jim Conroy, speaks with a Long Island accent and is critical but loving. Scruff Ruffman, Ruff's identical evil twin brother, is distinguished by a five-o'clock shadow; he becomes less evil over time and is paroled in season 5, living under Grandma Ruffman's custody. Ruffael Ruffmanowitz is Ruff's great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather, an inventor.
Production
Fetch! was produced at WGBH Studios in Boston. Seasons were filmed about a year before airing; season 4 was the first filmed in high definition in 2009. Challenges were shot mostly in Boston and other parts of Massachusetts, as well as various other U.S. locations, during summer when children were out of school. The field challenges were edited in a documentary style similar to network reality TV.
After filming challenges, contestants acted in-studio with Ruff's voice; Jim Conroy traveled from New York to Boston for two weeks of studio shooting. A fourth camera captured Conroy performing his lines as Ruff in the audio booth; the kids heard him in the studio and he heard their reactions through headphones. After recording, the show went into editing, where challenges were sorted into order. The edited episode was sent to Conroy in New York for Ruff's animation dialogue, then back to WGBH for audio placement, and finally to Global Mechanic in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for animation.
One of four editors used an off-set four-week system to send a new episode cut to Vancouver every Friday. Completing one season took about six months. Due to lack of funding, WGBH announced cancellation after season 5, even though casting for a sixth season was complete.
Spinoffs
In May 2014, a spin-off called Ruff Ruffman: Humble Media Genius was announced, debuting in fall 2014 with short animations of Ruff and Blossom focusing on internet safety. Episodes include titles such as Texting and You!, Photos and You!, Searching and You!, and Technology and You!, with additional videos released through 2017. A new season centered on artificial intelligence was released by PBS Kids on March 1, 2024, featuring a new cat assistant named Lupine.
On July 30, 2017, PBS Kids and WGBH announced The Ruff Ruffman Show, a digital series where Ruff, Blossom, and Chet answer kids' questions and model science inquiry skills; it premiered on September 28, 2017. On December 15, 2020, a web series called Team Hamster! premiered, focusing on Ruff's hamsters Sadie, Mateo, and Tasha, with Ruff as a janitor. Plans for a spin-off based on the online game Spyhounds, featuring Ruff, Blossom, and Chet as super-spies, were announced but later canceled.
On July 21, 2022, WGBH and Jim Conroy released FetchTok, a TikTok-based challenge where Ruff asks viewers to record themselves performing challenges; former FETCHer Liza Giangrande participates in three of the four challenges.
