SciGirls

Real girls doing real science and engineering.

Last updated

SciGirls is an American live-action/animated children's television series produced by Twin Cities PBS. Launched in February 2010, it is an educational outreach program for elementary school children based on proven best practices for STEM education for girls. The show was designed to encourage girls to pursue STEM careers in response to the low numbers of women in many scientific fields.

Overview

Each episode follows a group of middle-school girls engaged in STEM-themed activities, such as engineering a miniature wind farm, creating a turtle habitat, or designing an electronic dress. Women scientists and engineers mentor the girls, showing that STEM subjects can lead to rewarding lifelong pursuits. The series is unified by two animated characters, Izzie and Jake, who emphasize how science and technology solve everyday problems.

Characters

Izzie, voiced by Lara Jill Miller, is a 12-year-old girl with a wide range of interests who also serves as webmaster for the SciGirls website. She can zap herself into her computer to follow real-life SciGirls videos and design solutions to her dilemmas.

Jake, voiced by Greg Cipes, has been Izzie's closest friend since preschool and often joins her scientific adventures. His pet mouse, Fang, frequently helps them. Each episode also features real girls working alongside a woman STEM professional.
