Grand Belial's Key (GBK) is an American black metal band from Oakton, Virginia, formed in 1992 by guitarist Gelal Necrosodomy and vocalist Lord Vlad Luciferian. Although the band has rejected the label, it is widely associated with the National Socialist black metal (NSBM) scene. GBK has released four full-length albums.
The group began in 1992 with Gelal on guitars, bass, and keyboards, and Bestial Luciferian on drums and vocals. That year they recorded their debut demo, *Goat of a Thousand Young*. Their first concert in 1993 featured guests Kommando (bass, from Arghoslent) and Tom Philips (keyboards, from While Heaven Wept). After the show, Gelal temporarily left due to animosity toward Bestial Luciferian, but the lineup changes were fluid rather than a complete split. Bestial Luciferian, now calling himself Lord Vlad Luciferian, attempted to reform GBK with Demonic on bass, and convinced Gelal to rejoin. This lineup recorded the *Triumph of the Hordes* demo in 1993. Following its release, Gelal and Demonic discovered that Lord Vlad Luciferian had added female vocals to a song without permission and mishandled deals with record companies. Gelal fired him, and Demonic quit due to lack of time. Gelal then recruited The Marauder (guitarist from Arghoslent) on bass and The Black Lourde of Crucifixion (Cazz Grant from Crucifier) on drums and vocals. This lineup recorded the *A Witness to the Regicide* EP in 1996.
The debut album, *Mocking the Philanthropist* (1997–2000), made GBK one of the most controversial underground black metal acts in the United States. Bassist Der Stürmer replaced The Marauder, and the LP was released on Belgian label Wood-Nymph. The CD booklet featured photos of the band wearing shirts of far-right groups like Bound for Glory and Spear of Longinus, leading to tour boycotts and distribution problems. In its first nine years, GBK played only nine gigs. Germany’s Rough Trade Records refused to distribute the album due to the offensive booklet; Wood-Nymph declined to reprint it, and the label soon folded. The CD was later repressed by Moribund Cult (2004) and Drakkar Productions (2006).
The follow-up, *Judeobeast Assassination* (2001), targeted what the band saw as the inseparability of Judeo-Christianity, mocking both the Old and New Testaments (the debut had focused on the New Testament).
