Dragonlord is an American symphonic black metal band formed in 2000 as a side project by Eric Peterson of Testament and Steve Smyth of Nevermore. The band emerged from Peterson's interest in darker music, which he could not pursue with Testament. Combining black metal elements such as screeching vocals and keyboards with thrash guitar influences, Dragonlord explores lyrical themes including dragon rage, death, war, lost love, and Satanic or anti-religious subjects.

Dragonlord was conceived in 2000 as a side project by Eric Peterson of Testament, along with Steve Smyth of Nevermore. The band's lineup has included keyboardist Lyle Livingston (formerly of Psypheria), drummers Jon Allen and later Alex Bent, and bassist Tilen Hudrap (who contributed to Dominion). Derrick Ramirez, who played guitar briefly in Testament in the late 1980s, was not a founding member and did not play bass for Dragonlord. Steve Di Giorgio was not a founding member of Dragonlord.
In 2009, Peterson stated via Kerrang that a new album was in progress but delayed due to his commitments to Testament. In 2010, he told Terrorizer that the label doubted the album's potential and that financial risks made completion uncertain, estimating an 83% chance the album would not be released. Despite this, Dragonlord signed to Spinefarm/Universal Records on March 7, 2012. By October 2013, Peterson confirmed recording of a new album, Dominion, which was in mixing by April 2015 and finally released on September 21, 2018. The album featured guest bassist Tilen Hudrap on the track 'The Discord of Melkor,' inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien.
