European warfare at the time relied on disciplined regular armies equipped with flintlock muskets, bayonets, and smoothbore artillery.[1] The Seven Years' War was a worldwide conflict whose first engagements occurred in 1754, when a force led by George Washington ambushed French troops at Jumonville Glen on 28 May, and the French then forced Washington's surrender at Fort Necessity on 3 July.[2]

Life and work

They also wanted access to the fertile Ohio River Valley for new colonists.[3] The French built Fort Duquesne at the strategic Forks of the Ohio River.[2] George Washington led a colonial militia force that ambushed a French party at Jumonville Glen on 28 May 1754.[2] Britain and France did not negotiate after these clashes and sent regular troops to North America.[4]

Britain allied with Prussia in the Diplomatic Revolution of 1756, while Austria sided with France.[5] After Washington's ambush at Jumonville Glen on 28 May 1754 killed ten French soldiers including their commander, the French responded by attacking Washington's army at Fort Necessity on 3 July 1754, compelling him to surrender.[2]
