Life and work
His father died in 1743, leaving him Ferry Farm and ten slaves.[3] Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis on January 6, 1759.[4] The marriage gave him control over a large estate, making him one of the wealthiest men in Virginia.[4] On June 14, 1775, Congress created the Continental Army and John Adams nominated Washington as its commander-in-chief.[2]
Augustine and Mary Ball Washington had six children, of whom George was the firstborn.[1] Because his father died, Washington did not get the same formal schooling as his older half-brothers, who attended Appleby Grammar School in England; his own education was at the Lower Church School in Hartfield.[3] A surveyor's license was granted to Washington by the College of William & Mary in the year after he spent a month surveying in the Shenandoah Valley.[5]
