Spanish Civil War

Last updated

From 1936 until 1939, the Republicans and Nationalist rebels fought a war in Spain.[1]

Life and work

General Francisco Franco was appointed supreme leader of the Nationalists on 1 October 1936.[2] On 5 March 1939, Colonel Segismundo Casado led a military coup against the Republican government, intending to seek peace with the Nationalists.[3] A group of generals attempted a coup d'état in July 1936 against the Popular Front government; its partial failure initiated the war.[4] By 1938 and into 1939, the capture of much of Catalonia and the isolation of Madrid from Barcelona left the Republican forces in a hopeless military situation.[3]

On 1 April 1939, Franco entered Madrid and proclaimed victory.[3]

What the cited sources add

The air bridge began on 20 July 1936, with flights of three Fokker F-VII military aircraft between the airfields of Sania Ramel and Tablada.[5] In seventeen days, eight shock battalions were transferred from Africa to the Peninsula, six by air and two by ship.[5]
