Life and work

The defeat in 1456 at the siege of Belgrade held up Ottoman expansion into Catholic Europe for 70 years.[2] The Ottoman Emirate entered Europe amid a destructive civil war between John V Palaiologos and John VI Kantakouzenos along with his son Matthew Kantakouzenos.[3] The Ottoman–Venetian wars lasted from 1423 until 1718, a period of four centuries.[4] European powers formed the Holy League in the late 17th century, which reversed several Ottoman territorial gains during the Great Turkish War of 1683–99.[5]
